Penguin: Development

After reviewing my initial ideas I decided to develop more typographic experiments using power and democracy. Upon reflection I felt the initial experiments where too powerful, making the book look like it was called power and democracy. This lead to the smaller designs below (see figure 1), looking at varying layout option in order highlight the concept of the book (democracy/power) whilst making it clear that The Establishment is the title. I started to look at aligning the copy to the left in order to represent the left wing influence of the book which is the most successful in showcasing the design, content of the book and the copy (see figure 2). I also looked at removing the line from power/democracy as the use of red highlights the dominance of power over democracy without the line, however I'm unsure so plan to gain more feedback on my refined designs (see figure 2).

When looking more at the line I decided to look at just incorporating the line to show how Jones is drawing a line under the old establishment and redefining the establishment today and how it has developed (see figure 3). The use of the line at the side and middle create a more abstract representation of this concept, however the use of placing the line just below the title showcases the concept more accurate (see figure 4). This use of the line allows the text to still be aligned to the left to show the left wing influence throughout the book, hinting to the political opinion within the book without alienating those who might have different opinions. Throughout these experiments black and white have been used to create a contrast against the red which highlights the arguments raised within the book. Times New Roman (see figures 1-4) has been used within these experiments based on the links to private business and newspapers made within the book. Originally GT Sectra Fine was used however as this is a competition brief I don't have the correct licensing to use the typeface within my submission.

I plan to gain peer feedback on which of the designs is most successful as I'm unsure which I could develop further out my final experiments (see figure 5-7). This will also allow foe multiple opinions to be gathers to identify any issues I may have missed.
