Penguin: Wonder by Rj Palacio Summary

Wonder is about the life of August 'Auggie' Pullman, a ten-year-old boy who was born with mandibulofacial dysostosis, he has grown used to people's reactions. The book follows Auggies journey starting firth grade and attending school for the first time, having been homeschool previously. Throughout the book you see the story from different perspectives based on those close to Auggie. The main focus of the story is Auggies attempts to make friends at his new school as some of the 'popular' kids react badly to his disability, spreading a rumour that if you touch Auggie you will 'end up like him'. However he makes two friends initially Summer and Jack, however Jack and Auggie fall out during the book as Auggie overhears Jack making mean comments on Halloween. However they eventually become friend again and a 'war' beings between Jack and Julian (one of the popular kids) because Julian doesn't want Jack to be friends with Auggie. Towards the end of the book after the school trip to a nature reserve the rest of the kids start to see past Auggies disability and start to become friends with him. Auggie is then awarded the Henry Ward Beecher for courage and kindness. Auggie finally feels comfortable and accepted in school.

The main message of this book is to look past peoples appearances and see people for who they are not just want they look like, as well as accepting yourself and not being ashamed of who you are and being comfortable in your own skin.
