Penguin: Evaluation

Overall this brief was interesting as it was enjoyable to design for a variety of audiences across the three book covers. Throughout this process I found Wonder the most challenging as I struggle to design for children, with the final cover being more target towards parents than children. This brief has highlighted that my strengths lie in designing for older audiences as I feel the concepts I've developed for the adult fiction and non-fiction covers were a lot stronger than those developed for Wonder. However despite this, all three covers have been finished to a high standard representing key elements with the boo communicate the main message of the book to the audience without revealing key details that would ruin the reader's experience. I feel the strongest cover is The Establishment as the simplicity of the cover reflects the political messages within the book without alienating those who might have different opinions. Furthermore the Norweigan Wood cover is successful as it doesn't look like a traditional book cover, due to the visual cues taken from letter writing. This simple approach represents an important act to the characters without showcasing any important details. Furthermore this is a completely different aesthetic that previously used on Murakami novels making the cover stand out and attract new audiences. Although the Wonder cover may attract parents rather than children the subtle use of colour will make the book stand out on a shelf however the lack of illustrations may limit the attract of children. Overall designing all three covers was an interesting challenge as it allowed me to explore designing for a range of audiences across different topics.
