In order to gain a greater understanding of what is possible to include within a more simplistic pinball machine, multiple tutorials have been watched to see how simple systems can be adapted within a larger more sophisticated machines (see figure 1). This has allowed certain main components to be identified which will feature within the pinball machine. Although the tutorials use mainly cardboard the simplistic design can be transferred to wood, allowing a more stable and hard waring machine to be made. A small test machine will be built using cardboard to test if the machine/layout will work, allowing the designs to be created based on the layout/dimensions chosen. The most complicated section of the machine will be the flippers as I want the mechanisms that make them work to be hidden underneath the box. This is possible however may interrupt the ball once it has fallen through the holes as the ball needs to then run down to the bottom where there will be a hole allowing the person to play again. Therefore the mechanisms will need to be boxed off and place in between the holes to limited interruption with the box around being angled to allow the ball the fall down if it lands on the box (see figure 2).
In addition to the machine itself each hole/graduation option could have a card/information so the user gets a route for themselves, potentially inspired by tarot cards or fortune tellers or fit the theme of the machine.
Components: Figure 1
- Base/shape -mdf or wood
- Runner for the ball/to start game
- Flippers - to hit the ball higher
- Design - holes, bumbers etc.
