Initial Feedback

In order to receive feedback on our initial ideas we had a group crit to gain a wide range of feedback. Based on this feedback I found that there was mixed opinions on whether to use a serif typeface in forms of Bodoni or use sans serif in the form of Univers. Consequently I've chosen to manipulated Univers as although this may be more difficult due to the neutral and uniform nature of the typeface, I feel it will be more appropriate when finished. Upon receiving feedback I've also found that I need to be less obvious with how i plan to manipulate Univers as making simple changes such as increasing the stroke weight to make it bold will not effectively represent defiance therefor I plan to conduct more research into defiant characteristics as well as protests. Consequently I plan to edit type in a more complex way by looking at ascenders and descenders as well as the cross bar within certain letterforms. I also plan to experiment by taking sections of the letterforms away too see how effectively this represents defiance.

Rational:

In order to respond to my word ‘defiant’ I plan to manipulate Univers by ignoring certain rules within type design and altering the cap height and x-height of letters as well as altering the length of ascenders and defenders and the hight of the cross bar within certain letterforms. I have chosen to manipulate Univers due to its simple and uniform nature as I feel experimenting with changing some of the key characteristics of universe such as its uniformity may complement ‘defiant’ well. I also plan to conduct more research into Univers as a typeface as well as the rules/techniques used within typeface design to see how I can manipulate my typeface more successfully.
