Univers:
Sans-serif typeface designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1954 and is based on the typeface Nuku Hass Grotesk which was also developed into Helvetica for the Swiss Style movement. Univers was originally released by Deberny & Peignot in 1957 however the type library was acquired by Haas in 1972. Since its release Univers has become one of the most widely used font due to its simplistic and easily legible nature as shown by Apple’s use of Univers on many of their keyboards up until 2007. Consequently it means Univers is a very versatile typeface and can be applied to multiple brands and settings successfully. Univers was widely used across Swiss Style however was overshadowed in popularity by Helvetica due to it s uniform and simple nature as although Univers is a very simple and minimal typeface like Helvetica it’s not as uniform.
Universe and Helvetica are similar in the sense that they are both simple, minimal sans serif typefaces however Univers is slightly more rounded in some ares such as the apex of the A and the taper of the E whereas Helvetica has a more straight finish with the apex of the A and taper of the E cutting out in a straight line. The uniformity of Helvetica due to its straight finishes allow the typeface to be slightly more legible than Univers. However I thought the uniform nature of helvetica might make it difficult to edit into a defiant typeface.
I plan to manipulate Univers to create my typeface based on the word ‘defiant’. I have chosen Universe due to its simplistic and minimal nature as I think this will make a good base to be able to edit the typeface to become more defiant.
