Working as part of a creative team put together a pitch for the concept, branding, identity and promotional collateral for the Leeds Public Spaces exhibition.
Initial Ideas:
Upon working within my group we came up with a range of ideas looking into different aspects of traditional print and Leeds central Library itself (figure 1-3). We also considered incorporating the locations or aspects of peoples work within our design however felt this would be too complex due to the numerous different spaces being used by others for their designs. Overall we decided to focus on traditional print methods and incorporating those into different pieces of promotional material e.g. letterpress would be use for invites. In addition we've discussed the use of imagery within the designs and decided to incorporate simple shapes into the designs in order to allow the main focus of the branding to be the method of production (see figure 4). We also decided as a group to each develop are own initial ideas using a set piece of branding based on the use of simple shapes and focus on specific methods of production. In addition to these decisions we also looked at choosing a typeface for the branding which was limited to those within letterpress as we only had a limit number to choose from. Consequently we chose Caslon for the title text and Univers light for the body text. Furthermore we also incorporated our initial idea based on placing aspects of the prints from the exhibition into the branding by taking the colours from our own prints and using them within our branding.
Finally we decided to create a name for the exhibition (see figure 3) based on the most important aspects of the exhibition to us. Initial we thought to just use the date of the first event and the last event however thought the use of dates might me hard to reference and didn't fully represent the exhibition as a whole. Consequently we focused on the historic/date ideas but chose Past Present Future as this makes reference to all events within the the exhibition as a concern with just using the dates was that some events may not have happened yet and therefore might not work with the use of just numbers. However upon further research we decided to experiment with german translations as the first printing press was invented by Johannes Gutenberg from Germany. As a group we experimented with different translations such as ink - tinte, space - platz, room - raum. We decided on Raum as this relates to the theme behind all of the artwork within the exhibition which is public spaces.
