Beer Identities: Production

In order to bind my publication I had to refer back to my mock up in order to determine where to fold and cut in order to successfully incorporate the folded sections once the book had been bound. This resulted in the need for two pages to be re-printed as initially not enough room was left to accommodate the margin for binding. Throughout the production processes the publication had to be glued three times in order to secure the pages together as they initially came apart when trying to fold the clueless page into the publication. Once the publication was more secure the clueless page was folded into the book and then the spin re-glued in order to further secure the pages. This process has been difficult due to the need for the book to expand once bound to accommodate the folded pages within. However the use of securing the spin when the glue is drying using bulldog clips (see figure 1-2) allows the pages to stick together within the specific margins so the folded aspects fit within the book and aren't accidentally glued into the spine. Additionally aligning each page to be secured within the spin was particularly difficult due to the variety in thickness of the pages, resulted in some pages sticking out at the side of the publication, these could be trimmed however due to the folded sections trimming the side would ruin some folded pages such as the hipster which would be cut in half due to the way it is folded into the book (3-5) see figures.

Upon reflection of these imperfections I decided to re-print and bind the publication to solve the issue of pages sticking out of the publication which created an unprofessional and messy finish. This problem was solved by redesigning each page to have an extra cm on the left hand side allowing each page to be secured using double sided tape (see figure 6-7). Creating this margin allows the book to be securely bound whilst still incorporating the folded sections with additional care being taken when trimming and folding pages such as the Hipster so each page would be flush. Additionally book tape has been used to further secure the publication adding some durability to the publication which is aided by the use of Tyvek paper for the hipster and clueless page. Both the clueless and hipster  (see figure 8) page started to deteriorate quickly once bound due to the stock use which lead to the decision to incorporate Tyvek within these pages as this didn't increase the price of the publication as its only used on two pages and added to the durability of the publication. Production of the second book was much easier due to the incorporation of a margin which allows each page to be stuck to each other using double sided tape as each page had a flat section to be stuck too. Due to this the folded pages didn't force the spin of the book to break as they don't interact/move the spine as the folds start after the crease of the book. Although the hipster page is a mm larger than the rest of the publication its still a lot neater than the first book, looking a more professional and finalised (see figure 9). However if more time was available I would refine the hipster page further so the folds would fit within the margins of the publication. In addition the sleeve of the book had to be redesign to be longer as the original sleeve was too small for the publication. Upon re-designing the small description of each personality has been removed to make the publication more difficult to read as feedback found it wasn't necessary as readers are supposed to draw there own conclusions about each personality based on the bar/pub their in (see figure 10).
