Adonis Specimen: Rebind

Perfect binding has been used again to rebind the book incorporating the silver embossed/debossed cover. A perfect binding machine has been used within this process instead of binding by hand in order to speed up the production process. The machine should also provide a more accurate and secure bind within the book. In order to prep the specimen for binding the pages were trimmed to the top section of the book was a few mm taller than needed, this allowed the pages to be better aligned within the machine (see figure 1). Furthermore the cover was also prepared by enhancing the front crease which acts as a guide when aligning the cover in the machine (see figures 2-3). Traditionally the back spine is creased first and the front made during the binding process however the front crease had already been made by the embossing plate. Once the pages were aligned in the machine the spine was 'roughed' which makes the glue stick to the pages more effectively (see figure 4-5). The glue was then spread over the spine by the machine, with the cover being pulled away to avoid glue touching before the cover was wrapped around using the machine (see figure 6). Overall the bind looked successful however there was a small crease within the front cover from where the cover had been pulled away during glueing. Furthermore once the glue has been allowed to dry I discovered the first few pages didn't bind well and the glue has overspilled on the black pages making them difficult to turn (see figures 7-8). Upon refelction, I think hand binding is more appropriate as I had more control despite the process taking longer. Therefore to avoid reprinting the book again the spin will be cut off this bind and the pages rebound by hand. As there is no full bleed imagery within the publication the specimen can be trimmed down slightly once rebound to remove any issues from the first bind.
