Initial Ideas
Upon developing our idea to repurpose the unused screens within the union we decided to focus more on how to create a more immersive experience such as being able to sample the gig or event before you bought tickets. In order to push this idea further we discussed the initial concept with Jack who suggested that we take the concept more to the extremes and not be confined by what is currently possible. Consequently leading to the idea of creating the 5 sense whilst users experienced the event via VR, smell, temperature, sight, hearing (how loud it is) and touch. Throughout the brainstorming processes we thought of different experiences the service could offer such as restaurants, gigs, nights outs, society events but also we discussed the idea of a form of virtual Tinder which would allow users to experience 30 secs or a sample of a potential date to see if they would want to go in real life.
Development:
Upon discussing our initial ideas with Jack he found the concept of virtual Tinder much more interesting than that of the ability to experience different events/ nights out as this development of Tinder felt more organic and logical, almost like the next step in developing the app. Therefor allowing the group to develop ideas of how best to showcase this new platform which was difficult in the beginning due to the use of technology within the concept that we didn't have access too. After brainstorming different ideas such as showing a 360° (see figure 1) to show that an entire environment could be created. However we felt this didn't properly showcase the idea effectively leading to the decision to film short clips of people to showcase the swiping motion and to film someone for slightly longer in order to show the different aspects that would happen within the date aspect of the app. In relation to the swiping action this will allow for a more personal aspect to be added to the app as the short clips where more playful that a flat image. Furthermore if you found someone you like you could stay on their profile and the classic options such as Instagram and Spotify would be shown as well as the additional feature of being able to hear the persons voice, they would say their bio. As a group we decided to showcase these aspects as these where the easiest to implement in the short time span, however we also had the idea that the environment the person would be in would be based on where they would take you for a date so you can properly 'sample' the date before deciding if you wanted to go. Furthermore we also thought that the background could be made up of the persons Instagram photos in the back as the whole experience would be holographic rather than an actual person as seen in our example video.
Production:
Once we had decided on the best way to showcase our idea, we started to ask fellow students if they would mind being filmed for a few seconds. This allowed the swiping motion to be captured as well as filming one student (Sophie) slightly longer so we could showcased the different aspects of the virtual profile. Due to the limited time frame we had to film these clips on an iPhone 8 plus camera in order to produce the video quickly ready to presenting. Once all the videos had been taken I then imported them into Premier Pro in order to cut and place the different clips together (see figure 2) to create a flowing video. After this had been done the footage was then imported into After Effects allowing 'blank' screens to be placed in between each person in order to remove the floor from the footage to create a more professional/ accurate representation (see figure 3). Once the basic video had been completed, I then placed the icons created by Josh into the video to show the options to hear the persons voice by clicking the i icon and also using the Instagram and Spotify logos to show to option of viewing these aspect of the persons profile (see figure 4). We also added a short section of information in the left hand corner featuring the persons name, age and height. The placement of this information was influenced by where a persons name and age appears within the existing Tinder app.
Feedback:
Upon presenting our video and our reasoning and ideas many liked the concept we had created which was effectively communicated within the video and presentation. Furthermore Jack liked the fact that this example felt like the next logical step within the development of Tinder and questioned how we could make the experience more immersive. It was at this point where we explain the idea of have the environment based on the date setting. Personally I'm pleased with the outcome we created within the 2 hr time frame due to the difficult nature of trying to demonstrate the VR experience without the technology or software. Furthermore if more time was available we could have created a branded intro to the demonstration the brand/ concept in a stronger format. However overall I think the video as a whole effectively portrays our concept. In relation to working within my group I felt we worked well together throughout, specifically within the brainstorming section of the workshop as we all had different ideas of how to develop the concept allowing us to push the idea further as we bounced of each others ideas.
