Micro Music Genre: Commentary Project

Commentary is an exhibition exploring the visual culture of football by asking designers to create a flag based on their relationship with the game. The exhibition is about matching a landscape and took place just before the Champions League final in 2015. Fan flags caption current emotions and are a powerful way for fans to express themselves and antagonise rival supporters. The exhibition aims to show a snapshot of footballs link to visual culture in a similar way that fan flags around a stadium provide a snapshot of the club and the fans concerns/support. The ability to get multiple different opinions of the game provide a varied snapshot of the visual culture associated with football. Personally I think The Chase's design (see figure 1) is particularly clever and interesting as it takes common visual cues associated with the game and edits them to highlights a common association with the game and speaks to the powerful nature of fan culture with the phrase 'football isn't a game, nor a sport. It's a religion'. Furthermore Craig Oldam's flag (see figure 2) is also particularly intersting as it speaks to a certain teams fans (Barnsley) and is based on a homemade banner seen on the M1 in Barnsley in 2000 the day they went to Wembley for the first-division play-off against Ipswich. This style of flag speaks to the wit and humour many football fans have which is something I plan to try to incorporate within my designs due to the humour within many football chants.
