Micro Music Genre: Digital Print Production

In order to produce the physical flag to be displayed in the exhibition I spoke to Mike the print technician that handles fabric printing to see what production method would allow for a high quality finish. He suggested either printing onto kodatrace and then using the heat press to transfer the design onto material, however this method is limited by size as the heat presses are only A3 in size. This resulted in the use of digital printing onto sateen cotton as this allows for the a higher quality finish to be achieved. Overall the final print has been finished to a high quality with a fashion student cutting the excess fabric around the flag as I didn't think I would be able to accuratly cute the fabric without distorting the design. The only issue is some small sections of white around the edges of the flag (see figures 1-2), however this is a minor imperfection and doesn't take away from the overall aesthetic of the flag. In addition if more time was available the flag could have been made bigger to create a greater impact although the flag is a scaled down version of a football pitch the flag could just be scaled up.

In relation to the presentation of the flag it would of been interesting to place the flag in context however I couldn't find anyone who supported either Newcastle or West Ham as I wanted to photograph the flag with a fan from the loudest and quietest group. This lead my to show how the flag could be presented within the exhibition (see figure 3) as well as how it looks when held by someone (see figure 4-5) which was the only option available to the designer. Furthermore an additional issue faced was capturing the colour accuratly when photographing the flag, I tried multiple location and lighting option however when photographed the colours are slightly duller (see figure 6), with the best outcomes being those shown in figures 4-5.
