Product Range Distribution: Award Ideas/Production

In order to further develop my branding for the 'fake news awards 2018' I've looked into how to make an physical sculpture of the hand illustration (see figure 1) used within the branding. This lead me to look into different way to make a mould out of a persons hand that could then be cast using a material such a plater paris. Upon research I discover alginate a power (see figures 2-3) that when mixed with water forms a jelly like consistency which is non-toxic allowing you to remove your hand or object easily. The solid alginate has a sweating texture meaning it won't stick to the plaster allowing the mould to be cut away once the plaster has dried. Based on the research conducted I decided to use alginate powder to create my mould as this seemed like the easiest and most time-effective way to create an accurate representation of the hand (see figures 4-5). Throughout this process I was unsure about timing and measurements due to the volume of water and powder needed to cover my entire hand, resulting in the alginate mixture being slightly lumpy at the beginning of the casting process. This lead to some small imperfections within the final model as the lumps created some indentations on the figure nails. Also some mixture collated between my figures leading to some plaster bubbles within the final sculpture. However once the alginate had set it was a simple process to mix the plaster paris with water and then pour into the mould, leaving to set for overnight. Once the plaster had set I had to remove the mould which was difficult due to the shape of the hand as the alginate was inside the whole created by the two closed figures being the sculpture was encased with the alginate. This meant having to remove the alginate piece by piece therefore destroying the mould, however the hand was cast to a high standard once the mould was removed.

In order to make the sculpture look like an official award, I've chosen to spray paint it gold (see figures 6-7) as inspired by other award shows such as the Oscars. This was a simple process which require multiple light layers of paint in order to maintain the small details within the hand and avoid the paint clumping in any unwanted areas (see figures 8-14).
