Produce Range Distribution: Phishing emails

In order to further my visual research I've looked into phishing emails (see figures 1-2) which have subtle cues within there design to indicate that they're fake to see how I can incorporate subtle visual cues into the branding to indicate to its inauthenticity. Phishing is an attempt to gain personal or sensitive information often for malicious reasons. This can be done on multiple platforms such as websites, email, phone calls or text messages however there are multiple ways to spot fraudulent emails and texts:

  • Spelling, grammar
    • phishing emails will often use odd characters such as 'spe11lings' or 'cApitAls' in order to fool your spam box 
  • Not knowing your name or addressing the message to your email 
    • 'our valued customer' (See figure 1)
  • aesthetic of the website or email doesn't fit the brand/company 
    • poor image quality 
    • off colours 
    • different typeface
  • Website address;
    • usually short 
    • legit companies don't usually use irrelevant words or phrases
    • businesses and organisations don't use web based addresses such as Google or Yahoo 
Although this information was interesting I think the research into authenticity allows for more interesting visuals to be created for use within branding as taking visual elements from phishing emails would create an unprofessional finish to the branding.
