Micro Music Genre: Primary Research

In order to further develop my ideas I've conducted some primary research after receiving feedback on my initial flag designs. Consequently I interview some football fans who attend matches to help identify symbols that represent chants and other suggestions of how to encourage fans and represent fan culture as a whole.

Ollie: Man United supporter

  • drum, like drums at top of stadiums
  • megaphone
  • visualise ground commentary, fans can use to boost atomsphere
  • could have separate flags with icons to be used at different points within the match e.g free kick
  • something to lift the mood, encourage fans to chant when needed, e.g; when loosing
  • communicate unity, community
  • family atmosphere at the game
  • stand specific, home fans target away fans
Will:
  • could look at football hooligans, extreme fans to help focus/narrow down ideas
  • paper clappers, placed on seats of the game to encourage fans to make noise
  • vuvzela
  • instead of using existing symbols, create a new one for fans to learn
  • look at Icelandic fans clap chant
    • look at how starts with one and spread to all fans
  • difficult to represent fan culture as chants are team specific and differ between fans
  • different stands, maybe for one stand to start and encourage others

Overall this research was very helpful as it gave me different areas to look at in order to identify visual cues that will represent fan culture. Interestingly I find the idea of focusing on an specific area interesting due to the difficulties I'm having representing everyone. In particular I like the idea of look at different stands and the idea of unity/community.
