Micro-Genres of music: Identifying a Genre

Brief:
Throughly research a micro genre of music from everynoise.com. research must b extensive with the intension that you become an expert in this genre. This micro-genre will become the focus for the design and production of a new piece of work that will be exhibited.

In order to respond to this brief I started to explore everynoise.com (see figures 1-4)which features multiple genres and artists allowing you discover hundreds of new genres. Whilst browsing the website I discovered multiple genres which I though would be interesting to explore further both based on my personal interests and those I selected at random:
  • football
  • Australian hip hop
  • new age pop
  • memphis soul
  • deep comedy
  • country
Football:
Football chants date back to 1898 when Sir Edward Elgar wrote a short piece call 'He Banged the Leather for the Goal' in honour of Billy Malpass after reading an article detailing how he scored the winning goal for Wolverhampton against Stoke City. Since then many football chants have looked to existing songs often from opra, nursery rhymes, eurovision and music hall often create by fans in the week leading up to a game or sometimes spontaneously by witty fan who creates a chant for the game there at and its never repeated again. However there is one Manchester United fan who spends all week thinking of chants in his bath called Pete Boyle and has been credited with some successful chants over the years.  The chants are often inspired by current events within the football community or based on player who are particularly good and those who are particularly bad which grew in popularity during the 1970s.

Memphis Soul:
Memphis soul was one of the most prominent sounds of Southern Soul, produced in the 1960s and 70s at Stax Records and Hi Records in Memphis, Tennessee. The music features multiple different instruments such as organ, guitar, bass and drums. After the rise of Disco in the 1970s popularity for Memphis soul started to decline. One of the most significant contributors to memphis soul was Stax Records and there in-house band Booker T. & the M.G.'s, an instrumental R&B/funk band, with there best hit being Green Onions in 1962.

Country:
Country music originated in the Southern US, inspired by folk music and blues in the early 1920s.  Country music originates from folk music of working class americans inspired by traditional music from European immigrant communities such as Irish and Celtic fiddle tunes and traditional English ballads. However the genres only started to gain significant popularity in the 1940s when the term country music gain more popularity rather than hill-billy music which is what it was referred to as in earlier years. However the term today is used to describe many styles and sub-genres. The genre consists of many sub-genres such as:
  • Honky-tonk
  • Progressive country
  • Nashville sound
  • Outlaw country
  • Red Dirt

Upon reflect on the initial research I plan to further research football chants due to the intersting origins and production behind the songs. Furthermore the community contribution and origins of the songs is interesting especially as this aspect makes each chant personal to each club making it resonate with the fans, create a powerful and unified impression when sung in the stands.
