Nathan Smith - Me & EU:
Me & EU is a collection of postcards sent out with intention to keep the UK connected to Europe after the referendum. 116 postcards where sent out via email on the day article 50 was triggered as this signified the start of the process of the UK leaving the European Union. Me and EU aims to look beyond borders and shores to reconnect at a time of introspection. The postcards create a visual narrative of a country in transition as they provide a medium for people to express their opinions about Brexit whether its positive or negative. The variety of designs and personal opinions express the opinions of the designers, giving the collection a personal emotional aspect that people can relate to and laugh at as everyone has an opinion on Brexit. Furthermore this emotional aspect reinforces the aim of the collection which is to reconnect with Europe and the people in it. Furthermore the postcards also show that not everyone wanted to leave the EU and a lot of people in Britain still want to be accepted by those in Europe. Personally upon looking at the entries my favourites are those which take a clever (see figure 5-6) approach to the topic such as Harry Grundy whose postcard includes the lines used to make a paper aeroplane or those which use humour to tackle the issue such as Matthew Caldwell (see figures 7-8) and Sean Rees (figures 9-10). These examples accurately convey opinions in a way to appeal to those who are still in Europe to show that not everyone in Britain wants to alienate themselves from the EU.
