Many say fan culture, in relation to singing, was invested by Liverpool fans who supposedly stole the Liverpool clap-clap-clap chant from footage of Brazil fans at the 1962 World Cup. Fans where inspired by the Beatles and the Peacemakers and other Liverpool talent and started to replace words from pop songs to either cheer their team on or chant abuse at the opposing team. According to an article in the Guardian in 1964 'the BBC's Panorama visited the Kop in search of "the other Mersey Sound" and reported that "they don't behave like any other football crowd ... they sing the music that Liverpool has sent echoing around the world … with a inventive ferocity'. Many Liverpool fans say other fans saw there singing on TV and stole the idea for themselves thus a new football fan culture was born.

How Chants are Created:
Many chants are made up by fans in the week leading up to games or spontaneously within the game fro a specific game and are never sung again. However some chants are created by 'professionals' one being Pete Boyle who has been created with creating a number of successful chants for Man United over the years. Pete Boyle has been branded a super-fan for the commitment he has shown to Man United over the years travelling all over the world to see the team as well as writing numerous chants to support his beloved team, often creating and recording songs in his bathroom. On his website Boyle describes himself as 'an ordinary Manchester United fan who loves singing (usually badly) and having a few drinks with mates at United games home and away.'
