Letterpress

In order to experiment with showing the loss of control throughout the book I've chosen to incorporate letterpress into one of the pages. When first experimenting (see figure 1-2) I set the type using the principle that the first and last word of a word can be correct but the rest can be out of order and the word is still readable. As I correctly set the type, this created a structured and controlled aspect to the first set of experiments despite changing the layout of the page to create a more unstructured layout. This resulted in some overlapping prints which created an impression of a loss in control however this could be further developed.

In order to respond from feedback gain from tutors that the first set of experiments where too controlled and failed to fully highlight the drunken state of the personality, I decided not to set the type and place them into the letterpress (see figure 3-11). This gave me no control over how the letters printed as they would fall over or move as the rollers transfer ink onto the letters. This allowed for a set of progression prints to be created documenting the loss of control when printing, starting with a full print and finishing with the letters that remained standing until they had all fallen over (see figures 12-14). Throughout these experimentations I also changed the placement of the paper to create a more uncontrolled layout which results in the crossover or cutting off of certain letters and words, further adding to the loss of control experienced when drinking.
