OUGD404: Module Evaluation

Overall throughout this module I've significantly increased by knowledge surrounding editorial design including specific aspects such as pagination and printing. This knowledge has allowed me to successful produce a printed publication featuring inserts for studio brief 1 which was initially very difficult. Although I've learnt a significant amount about publications within this module it has been quite self directed which was initially difficult to get used too however I became more comfortable as I progressed throughout. Additionally I've also learnt the importance of choosing the correct paper stock as within the first book I produced  during studio brief 1 I chose a thick card for the inserts which would of been difficult to incorporate within the main book which used a thinner stock. Additionally within this first print the pagination was wrong causing two books to be produced (see figure 1). Therefor when it came to re-print the book a thinner newsprint was used for the inserts to allow them to fold into the main book easily once the pagination had been corrected (see figure 2). Colour has been a key theme across the module and has also helped in the understanding of RBG and CMKY as I previously didn't know the difference. However through working with printed outcomes I've discovered the use of CMKY which is a subtractive colour system meaning the more colour you add the more light is absorbed creating darker colours. Additionally I've leant about the different colour channels and how they relate to a specific printing panel which work together to produce full colour. In addition I feel this module has allowed me to understand the importance of colour within my work through the tasks set within studio brief 1.  This importance is something I've applied within other modules in order to create more meaningful work so that my decisions regarding colour are relevant to the work and have meaning, instead of just choosing colour because it looks good. Overall I've found this module particularly helpful as I feel I've learnt a lot regarding the production of publications as well as colour. However have struggled with the strongly self directed nature of this module as I found it difficult to figure how to improve my work based on self reflection. Despite these difficulties I've been able to develop my ability to self critique my work and develop it based on my own evaluations.
