EOYS: Group Development

Based on developments created individually we met as a group to discuss and develop more finalised outcomes together. Overall we decided the use of 3-dimensional elements was successful as it allowed the posters to stand out, giving them a more engaging element compared more flat designs. Initially, we took elements from Lornas designs and mine, combining to see if a gradient would allow the pattern to stand out more, enhancing the 3-dimensional elements. However this combination was overpowering due to the colours used (see figure 1). Therefore we looked at other colour combinations to identify which worked well with the 3-dimensional elements. Two-tones worked well as having the lines in a darker colour allowed them to stand out due to the contrast created however overall the group prefered brighter more engaging colours. Choosing a colour scheme was the most challenge aspect of this meeting as we wanted to move away from black (used in previous years) however we couldn't identify colours that complimented each other that the whole group could agree on (see figures 2-8). In relation to the layout having the type spaced within the gaps of the pattern was explored as the group found this was an interesting less conventional approach which suited the pattern. This lead to some re-arranging within the pattern as we felt the initial design resembled a person too much, distracting from the type. Furthermore the lines within the pattern where made thinner in order to make the pattern less overpowering. In addition, we looked at a more traditional layout to see if this made the type more legible, looking at filled and outline type to see which worked the best. The outlined type worked well in white on some designs as the contrast allowed it to stand out, however it got lost in more two-tonal colour experiments. Overall we decided to experiment further individually based on figure 9 as we felt this was the development that worked best however we were not 100% happy.
