In order to help inform and generate ideas I've looked at existing type specimens to help identify what should be included and gain layout/format inspiration.
Briefcase Type Foundry:
This specimen takes a less formal approach with a less technical approach, choosing to showcase each weight within a paragraph rather than by simply using the name of the type. Having multiple paragraphs next to each other creates a cramped appearance due to the heavy weighting throughout the typeface. The use of a more decorative representation of the type at the beginning of the specimen is interesting as it showcases the different characteristics and elements of the typeface.
Kiln Type Foundry:
In a similar style to that of the specimen above, the use of paragraphs of text to showcase the type works better due to the lighter weighted nature of the typeface. Furthermore centring the text and limiting the number of paragraphs per page allows for space to be created, avoiding the cramped appearance of the specimen above. Although the layout/format works for this typeface personally I find the specimen uninteresting, failing to sell the typeface. Personally I think the specimen could be more interesting if the paragraphs where broken up with more detailed explanation of the type/individual characteristics.
Colophon Foundry:
This specimen takes a more technical approach, explaining the details of the characters. Furthermore the introduction of the type works well as it details the concept and idea behind the type, selling the type more effectively. Breaking down the typeface into different weights allows each variation to be seen clearly with the use of a sample of characters to showcase the design, which further aids the simplistic design. The use of showing the typeface in regular including all characters allows the use of limited characters later successful as the regular acts as a basis for viewers to form an opinion on. Furthermore the introduction of colour makes this specimen more interesting to read through compared to the two above as the design is more visually engaging which sells the typeface more successfully than if simple black and white was used.
