A Call To Men - Tony Porter TED Talk
Taught men had to be tough, dominating, display no emotion unless anger or excitement. Taught that men were better than women in every way, more worth and that women where seen as sexual objects. This was the socialisation of man, the elements that make up the 'man box'.
Elements of the Man Box:
Includes all the ingredients 'needed to be a man' - what society has come to know as manhood.
Realised whilst trying to raise his son to 'be a man' realised he was perpetuating all the negative elements within the man box - wouldn't allow son to cry for too long. These actions have been learned from interactions/ societies expectations. Men feel fear of showing emotion as a result of the man box which holds them to the man box. Throughout the talk he also discussed the link between the treatment of women and the perpetuation of the man box as the values within the man box are linked to the oppression and sexualisation of women.
Although this talk was from 2010 the idea of the man box is still relevant today as many men still feel they need to conform to these ideas which are still perpetuated throughout society.
